JALN: Special Issue on Innovations in Online and Blended Education in Community Colleges – a focus on practical applications

The Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks (JALN) calls for papers for a Special Issue on Innovations in Online and Blended Education in Community Colleges. The intent is to collect short stories about innovative online and blended education practices in the nation’s community colleges. These stories should describe online and/or blended activities that illustrate how community colleges are using online/blended to further educational objectives and reach new populations including the workforce and ABE/ESL populations. Whenever possible, data should be included – for example, increases in enrollments, evidence of providing additional access to education, the effectiveness of the education delivered and especially interesting models that would be of interest to the entire Sloan-C community.

Co-editors for the issue are David Sachs, Associate Dean and Professor of Technology Systems in Pace University's School of Computer Science and Information Systems, and Maureen R. Bozell, Senior Associate, Workforce Strategy Center.

By May 15, 2010, please review JALN guidelines and submit papers to http://jaln.sloanconsortium.org/. Papers should be not more than 5000 words and 3 figures.

Brief submissions (3-500 words) on this topic are also invited to Sloan-C Effective Practices. Effective practices are automatically eligible for annual awards to be evaluated by innovation, replicability, impact, evidence and scope.

Streaming Video: AIME Takes On UCLA
by Linda K. Enghagen
In a widely reported dispute, the Association for Information and Media Equipment (AIME) is challenging the manner in which the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) permits faculty members to stream video to course Web sites. While no lawsuit has been filed to date, UCLA issued a press release on February 11, 2010 announcing it "temporarily suspended the posting of streamed content, effective at the start of winter quarter in January 2010."

Call for Papers Opening Soon for 16th Annual Sloan Consortium International Conference on Online Learning – Nov 3-5 (Orlando)

The call for papers will be opening soon for the 16th Annual Sloan Consortium International Conference On Online Learning: "Stimulating New Possibilities," to be held November 3-5, 2010 at the Caribe Royale Hotel and Resort in Orlando, FL. The conference strongly encourages proposals that reflect the implications for the field of specific e-learning experience and practices. Proposals that address blended learning, issues of diversity, international applications of online learning, open educational resources, social networking, and/or K-12 online education are especially encouraged.

When submitting your abstract for review, you will have the option to have it considered for one of the following Conference Tracks

Program Tracks include:

- Learning Effectiveness
- Technology and Emerging Learning Environments
- Student Services and Learner Support
- Faculty Development
- Professional Development and Workforce Training
- Leadership, Values and Society
- K-12 Online Education

In addition to submitting a proposal to one of the seven tracks, we invite you to submit a proposal for a pre-conference workshop. We are looking for intensive, in-depth, highly interactive sessions that explore key issues, tools and subject in great detail. The pre-conference workshop format allows for more detailed descriptions and walkthroughs during the quieter time before the conference.

The workshops have a high standard for innovation, creativity and the value-add that participants will take from the session. It is generally expected that there be a significant set of program materials beyond a power-point slide set, including sample materials, guides, etc. The program should not be a show and tell from one institution, but instead it must demonstrate a larger view.

Click here to submit a proposal.

The New 2010 Sloan-C Certificate

The Sloan-C Certificate prepares educators to teach and improve online courses using the Sloan-C pillars of quality in online education--learning effectiveness, scale, faculty and student satisfaction, and access. A unique feature of the certificate program is that expert mentors work individually with each certificate candidate to accomplish specific goals. The certificate consists of a 9-week foundation course and a variety of electives or learning specializations that focus on improving overall competency within a specific area of academic focus. The workshops in each specialization are structured to encourage skill development and practical application within the participants' specific job function. Upon completing the 9-week foundation course, individuals can select 3 individual electives, one specialization, or multiple specializations that best suit professional development objectives.

Participants achieve a Sloan-C Certificate by completing 3 chosen electives. Specializations will be cited on the candidate’s certificate of completion.

Specializations include:

- Administration
- Blended Learning
- Design and Delivery
- Tools and Techniques

The Sloan-C Certificate foundation costs $1,499 plus three (3) required electives; priced at $345 (10-day workshop) or $495 (3-week workshop). Elective workshops may be funded by coupons available through Sloan-C membership discounts and the Sloan-C College Pass professional development package.
