2011 Sloan-C Workshop Deadline Reminders Copyright Compliance for Online Educators Online educators need to understand personal liability for copyright infringement when using materials to supplement an online course. Copyright owners have sued and will continue to sue individuals. You also need to know how your original works can be protected. Publishers and the academic community have established a set of educational fair use guidelines to provide standards and protection for educators. Accommodating Students with Disabilities: Leveraging the Online Learning Environment Traditional institutions of higher education that have made significant commitments to newly-constituted online programs need to understand how existing disability services unit can absorb the need for serving online students with disabilities. They need to know the legal mandates that obligate them to provide support to online students with disabilities and to understand how to fulfill the obligation to serve this often ignored population. Moving Your Course Content Online Preparing instructional content and resources for use in the online classroom is challenging. However, once you learn a few strategies, you’ll be prepared to convert many types of content. This workshop will help you develop the knowledge and skills necessary to convert your course content for use in an online environment. You’ll learn about appropriate and accessible online formats as well as different technologies that will help you present your content efficiently and effectively. Open Educational Resources: Use, Reuse, Share Open Educational Resources (OER) have been defined as "digitized materials offered freely and openly for educators, students and self-learners to use and re-use for teaching, learning and research" (UNESCO). Join in this exploration of how to find high quality content and materials for use in teaching and learning. Hear from leaders of OER organizations and faculty who have found effective and creative ways to incorporate these resources in a variety of settings - online, blended, and traditional courses. The workshop sessions and topics will provide introduction to OER issues including where to find them, quality assurance, licensing, and use. Workshop leaders and presenters will share perspectives on how OER repositories, referatories, and consortia have been organized to help teachers and learners find, adapt, and incorporate OER into their experiences. Additionally, the workshop will explore the issues of using OER to help lower student costs, through providing alternatives to traditional textbooks.
