All Sloan Semester Provider Institutions were invited to share their thoughts on Sloan Semester through an online survey. Each institution was sent an email invitation and two reminder emails. A total of 107 responses were recorded from the 179 institutions on the list, for an overall response rate of 59.8%.
How did you hear about Sloan Semester?
Nearly one-half of all the provider institutions (49.5%) first heard about Sloan Semester on the Sloan-C listserv. Web sites were the source for 11.2% of all institutions.
Were courses offered in Sloan Semester already scheduled, or created uniquely for Sloan Semester?
The most common approach for provider institutions was to create new courses for Sloan Semester (43.9%), while slightly fewer (33.6%) provided only courses that had already been scheduled. The remaining group (22.4%) used a combination of both newly created and already existing courses.
Did you host any displaced Katrina students on your campus?
The majority of provider institutions hosted displaced Katrina students on their campus (61.7%), while 29% provided only online courses through Sloan Semester. The remaining (9.3%) were not sure if they had hosted any displaced Katrina students on campus or not.
Did any Sloan Semester students transfer to your institution?
Sloan Semester was intended to be "bridge" for students, to allow them to continue their studies and then to return to their home institution. Reports from the provider institutions show, by a four-to-one margin, that Sloan Semester students did not transfer to their institution (12.3% reporting at least one transfer compared to 47.2% reporting non transfers). A large number of institutions (40.6%) were not sure if any Sloan Semester students had transferred or not.
What was the faculty attitude towards teaching Sloan Semester courses?
Provider Institutions report a very positive faculty perception of Sloan Semester. Over two-thirds rate their faculty attitude as a “7” out of “7”, with another twenty percent providing a rating of “6” out of “7”. No institutions said their faculty were in the lowest two ratings, and only one provided a rating of less than neutral.
How did the Sloan Semester students compare to your regular students?
The vast majority of Provider Institutions said that the Sloan Semester were “about the same as our regular students,” with over eight in ten (81.1%) responding in this manner. A small number thought that the Sloan Semester students “were superior to our regular students” and 15.8% reported that the Sloan Semester students “were inferior to our regular students.”
Would you participate in another Sloan Semester-type program if one were made available?
Nearly one-quarter of those responding (24.3%) were uncertain if they “would participate in another Sloan Semester-type program.” However, of those that did have an opinion on this question, they overwhelmingly (72.9% to only 2.8%) reported that they would participate in another program of this type.
