Short Bio: 

Dr. Janet K. Poley is President/CEO of The American Distance Education Consortium (ADEC) and professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. ADEC is a non-profit organization including the state universities and land grant colleges.  Poley has served as PI and administered federal and foundation grants of approximately $10 million.  She has held this position since 1994.  In 2009 she was selected as a finalist for the prestigious Brook International Prize in Education. She received the Charles and Mildred Wedemeyer Award as outstanding Distance Education practitioner. She is incoming chair of the Board of Directors of the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame and has been treasurer and a member of the Sloan Consortium Board of Directors since its incorporation. Prior to 1994 she was a member of the Senior Executive Service in the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington D.C.  She headed the Communication, Information and Technology unit and worked with the Clinton White House putting it on the Internet and expanding the national and international reach of ALN programs.  From 1975 - 1989 she served in senior federal positions focused on international development, including six years in Tanzania as Director of a multi-million dollar training and development program.  She received the U.S. Congress Excalibur Award for her Tanzania work. She has worked in more than 40 countries in planning and implementing programs in education using technology.  From 1966 - 1975 she was a faculty member at the University of Nebraska.

Poley has a PhD in education with a specialization in computer science and communication and information technoloy.  She holds professorships in the Colleges of Education and Human Sciences; Applied Leadership, Education and Communication in the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and  the College of Journalism with specialization in communication policy particularly related to issues before the FCC.  She woks closely with federal agencies especially NSF, USDA and DOC  on strategies for reaching rural, remote and underserved audiences through the internet based technologies.  The Alfred P. Sloan Consortium and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation has assisted in financing activities in this area.  She collaborates with ADEC members on many levels of activity and frequently is requested to weigh in with policy makers and media on issues in distance education and online learning.
