Area of Expertise Short Description:

My focus has been teaching the adult student. The adult learning perspective (andragogy) is an approach where lectures are replaced by class exercises and the motto becomes “let the class do the work”.  This approach recognizes that the adult learner brings as much value to the learning experience as the facilitator.  A facilitator facilitates the learning experience, through leading discussion and activities, through group dynamics and dialogue techniques, and through listening and coaching.  The facilitator creates a cooperative environment with the students.  Adults are life-centered or task-centered, or problem-centered and thus so too should their education be centered.  This approach requires understanding that the role of the teacher has shifted from a purveyor of knowledge to a   “facilitator of learning”.  Success in creating a learning environment from an andragogy perspective allows for a learning experience for students that not only provides knowledge and critical thinking skills, but also gives students the skills to “Learn How To Learn”.  The adult student is provided the opportunity to gain knowledge, share knowledge, use knowledge, and learn how to learn for the rest of their lives.
