Participants will:

  • Increase and provide quality engagement in an online academic environment
  • Discussion thread design: threading, pace, sequencing discussion prompts, using Socratic dialog, modeling reflective exchange, and closing down an exchange
  • Help students communicate clearly without the aid of nonverbal communication cues
  • Create exemplary exchanges

Online Workshop Description: 
In the online classroom, interaction prompts more interaction by stimulating more perspectives, points of view, ideas, questions, and disagreements. Through collaboration and discussion, both facilitators and students help each other in the learning process.

Presenter/Panelist Biographies
Biographies of Presenters/Panelists: 

John Thompson

John Thompson, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at Buffalo State College in the Educational Technology graduate program. He teaches nearly all his graduate courses 100% online, having taught online courses since 2000. He also operates his own educational consulting business, Global Learning Institute, Inc.

Dr. Thompson has over 40 years of experience in education, including over 25 years’ experience with computer technology. His previous career experience includes working in K-12 schools a teacher and an administrator, including school superintendent. He also functioned as director of training for two state governments and director of a computer training organization. He has chaired conferences, done presentation and paper reviews for numerous conferences and publications, made presentations at many local to international conferences, and has many publications in his field.

Dr. Thompson's Ph.D. in Education Administration researched connections between adult education principles and writers of computer documentation. His current research interests include asynchronous online discussions, desktop Web conferencing, green computing, and Web 2.0 applications.
