Online Workshop Description: 
The topic of retention continues to gain interest across the fields of higher education. Online student retention rates can be significantly lower than on-campus equivalents. With record numbers of students studying online, it is imperative that academic institutions discover why online learners have a significantly lower rate of persistence than on-campus students and understand how to improve success rates.

Presenter/Panelist Biographies
Biographies of Presenters/Panelists: 

Ruth Bennett

Ruth Bennett is an educator and professional consultant. Her career highlights include teaching undergraduate courses online and in the classroom; teaching teachers how to teach online; working with high risk, inner city, elementary school children; designing and providing training and coaching in communication and the management of people for both profit and non-profit organizations; and designing and marketing continuing education. She currently teaches communication at Western Carolina University and a variety of courses online for the University of Phoenix and for UNC’s LearnNC program. Ruth has a BA and MA from Emerson College, a Communication Arts and Sciences college. Her publications include articles in professional journals in the United States and Canada, and privately published books in sales, customer service, and management.

Marie Fetzner

Marie Fetzner joined Monroe Community College (MCC) in 1987 and currently serves as the Assistant to the Vice President of Educational Technology Services (ETS). Her job functions include project management, divisional budget development and monitoring, personnel, technology planning, technology assessment and research, and a variety communication functions.  In 2006-07, Marie served as Director of Online Information and Distance Learning at Montgomery College, Montgomery County, Maryland.  From 2003-2006, she was on special assignment as MCC’s Banner Project Manager.

In 1997, Marie served as a founding member of MCC’s “Monroe Model” team that provides comprehensive support to online faculty and students.  Marie also coordinated MCC’s online faculty training for seven years.  She is a certified Quality Matters™ Reviewer and is on the Music review board for MERLOT. Marie is an MCC adjunct assistant professor and she currently teaches online College Orientation and Introduction to College courses. Additionally, Marie serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks (JALN).

Marie is pursuing an Ed.D. degree at the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development at the University of Rochester, where her research focuses on online student retention.  Marie holds a Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) degree from SUNY Brockport and earned a Bachelor’s of Music degree from the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music.
